WoW Classic TBC is here and for most of us, once we hit level 70 our main concern will be how to make our character stronger, so today we’re going to answer just that by going over every known and less known avenue of gearing in Outland and seeing what the fastest way to get your character geared up is in Classic TBC.
This guide is mainly going to be focused on phase 1 but you can follow the guide at any phase of the game, later phases introduce better and faster avenues for gearing, but overall the process will be the same whether you reached level 70 in phase 1 or phase 5, it’s just that you’ll be able to do it faster with later catch up mechanics that we will also talk about in this guide.
1. Questing
Believe it or not, while , in some cases you’ll be able to grab pre raid best in slot gear from random Outland quests depending on your class and spec. For this reason, you should always consider what spec you'll be playing at max level and keep that in a corner of your mind when faced with a quest reward choice. You should always check your pre raid bis list before you start just in case or at least mid way through your
journey, you might for example, as a priest, stumble upon a quest that rewards you either a DPS trinket or a healing trinket, without thinking too much about it, you'll choose the DPS trinket because that's the spec you're with, not knowing that the healing trinket was your pre raid bis healing trinket and guess what, your guild wants you to heal in raids, so that's why you should check your pre raid bis list before you even start .
With that said tho if you're already level 70 and you didn't pay much attention to that we wouldn't worry too much, as we said quests will only reward you with “pre raid bis” gear at best and in very niche scenarios, and you'll probably find a slightly inferior replacement for that piece that you missed or even replace it with actual raiding gear quite fast.
2. Reputation
Before we move on to the next avenue of gearing, quickly go and check your reputation tab, a lot of reputations have some decent entry level gear to offer with as low as honored. If you leveled through questing, you will probably have reached honored by level 70. So consider going around the world checking those reputation vendors for some decent entry level reputation gear.
3. Normal Dungeons
At this stage we're still on the pre raid best in slot gear level, so your next step to gear up is normal dungeons. There's a lot of really awesome pieces of gear that you can get from normal dungeons, and sometimes even best in slot pieces period, like it's the case with hunters and their Beast Lord set that will last them all throughout tier 4 and until you get your 4 piece tier 5 set, but that's a special case, for most classes normal gear will be your pre raid bis gear and you'll replace it with raid gear.
One last thing about normal dungeons before we move on is that a lot of those dungeons are targeted towards low level players for , for example remparts is a level 58 dungeons that will mostly have no gear for anyone, whereas Shadow Labyrinth or Steamvaults are level 70 normal dungeons with level 70 gear, so that’s one thing to consider for normal dungeons, not all of them are worth doing. It's a different story with heroic dungeons tho, all of those are scaled up to level 70 so they’re all worth doing.
4. Heroic Dungeons
After you got some good gear from normal dungeons and questing, you’re now ready to take on heroic dungeons, given you're attuned of course. All heroic dungeons require you to be revered with a certain faction to enter them, later on in the game, probably in phase 3 or 4, that requirement will be relaxed down to honoured instead of revered, so that's the first catch up mechanic we’re mentioning here, heroic dungeons will be easier to get access to later in the game allowing you to gear up faster, given you can clear them of course.
But once you're geared enough, attuned and ready to take them on, heroic dungeons will give you gear on par with raiding gear, at least tier 4 raiding gear, if not even slightly better in some cases, and the best part about it is that unlike raids that reset weekly, heroic dungeons reset daily, so really your goal ideally would be to clear all 15 dungeons that TBC has to offer every day, but obviously very very few people will do this, so just try to do at least a few everyday.
5. Raiding
To be honest getting into raiding is probably easier than getting into heroic dungeons, especially for Karazhan, but we still decided to consider it the next step because it is generally a step up in difficulty in the later tiers compared to heroic dungeons. So in phase 1, obviously we only have 3 raids, Karazhan, Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair, and later on there will be more raids that are more challenging opening at every stage of the game but in TBC there's isn't really any catch up mechanics that will allow you to skip entire raid tiers like there is in retail, so that's one advantage to starting early in the expansion.
But those first few raids are quite easy, especially Karazhan, it's a 10 man raid with very simple mechanics and bosses, and you'll probably clear it an hour or two with a good group. The only barrier to entry for Karazhan is the attunement, it has you do quite a lot of normal dungeons and quests
around the world to get attuned, but later on in the game this attunement is removed and you'll be able to enter Karazhan as long as the door is opened by any player outside.
Another 10 man raid is Zul'Aman, this one is added with phase 4 and is a catch up raid, which is a raid tuned for lower geared players and drops current level gear, which will help players catch up with the rest of the crowd, so if you joined late or made a character after phase 4 make sure to take advantage of ZA.
6. Badges of Justice
Raids and heroic dungeons will reward you with this currency that you can exchange at an NPC in Shattrath for raid equivalent gear. Badges of Justice drop from every boss in every raid, every boss in every heroic dungeon, and from the daily badge of justice quest in Shattrath, this quest rotates every day and has you kill the last boss of a random heroic dungeon in exchange for 2 Badges of Justice, so at the very least you should aim to do this quest every day to be as efficient with you time as possible. And ideally, if you're a turbo nerd, you would clear every heroic dungeon every day and that will allow you to gear up in no time, but very few people will do this.
7. PVP Gear
PvP gear is pretty good for raiding depending on the class. Blizzard did announce some changes for the Arena which we will talk about in a second, but for those completely new to the game, you get rewards from PvP by either doing Battlegrounds or Arena, or world PvP but that's mainly just for fun. Battlegrounds give you honor points and the Arena gives you Arena points, Honor points allow you to buy some entry level blue PvP gear which is quite decent if you’re missing a piece or two and you have some honor laying around, and Arena points allow you to buy the top of the line PvP epic gear.
Here's the change Blizzard announced about the PvP seasons in Classic TBC, your arena team will start at a rating of 0 instead of 1500 like it was originally in TBC, and Arena gear from every season will requite a rating going upwards of 2200 rating for certain pieces, so what this means is that PvP gear will be significantly harder to get than it originally was and only actual PvPers will be able to take advantage of it in raiding and dungeons. That being said, once a given season is over and the game moves on to the next season, the gear from the previous season will have its rating requirement removed and it will also be discounted on the vendor, so for example once Season 2 starts you could snag some season 1 arena gear quite easily, but yeah you'll still need to PvP and that's not everyone's cup of tea, but that's something to consider.
8. Crafted Gear
There's a lot of really good gear to get from a lot of professions and for a lot of classes. To talk about hunters again, there's the Primalstrike gear which is a solid set to get from Leatherworking, we also know that Warlocks and Mages benefit a lot of spellstrike gear from Tailoring, Arms Warriors and Ret Paladins pretty much need to have blacksmithing for the Lionheart weapons, and the list is still long.
So crafted gear is really prevalent in TBC and you should definitely consider getting it as soon as you can afford it, it will cost a lot WoW Classic TBC gold tho, especially with how inflated the economy is after 2 years of Classic WoW, but if you want some very solid gear that will last you for a very long time before even setting foot inside a raid, you should definitely consider getting some good crafted gear.
9. Classic Raids
From WoW Classic, there's a few really good pieces to get from old raids, the most famous example is Thunderfury, as a protection warrior this will last you until Black Temple pretty much and every guild should be looking to do some biding runs if their main tank doesn't have one yet, another example would be Neltharion's Tear for casters, a really strong trinket that is only replaced by raiding gear. There's also the Mark of the Champion for
melees and casters, most of what you'll be fighting in Outland will either be undead or Demons and this trinket is very strong in most scenarios, and the list is still long, but the point is if you and your guild are out of content to do for the week, consider going through those old raids really quick to get those strong items, they are worth it in a lot of cases.
10. World Bosses
If you play retail a lot, this might seem like a good option, but world bosses in Classic and in TBC are a completely different story than retail world bosses: 1) they're very tough to do and all of them give you a debuff that prevents you from engaging them again for 10 minutes, 2) they have a really really long respawn timer, which means that they will be camped by the higher tier guilds 24/7.
In fact world bosses are probably the most exclusive piece of content in the game, they're so hard to get into that probably less than 1% of players will even get to get a tag for one, let alone kill them, but if you do manage to kill them they drop a lot of really good gear. To mention hunters again there's the Barrel Blade Longrifle, the bis gun in phase 1, but very very few hunters will get to wear this. So world bosses are good but you should only focus on them if you've exhausted every other avenue of gearing in the game.
11. BOE Gear
There's a lot of really good blue or even epic quality world drops in Outland, if you can manage to get one for your class and spec while levelling you're really lucky, but mostly if you're looking to get one of those world boes you'll probably have to buy it from the auction house, again for hunters there's the Valanos Longbow, a pretty decent blue ranged weapon, and then there's also Don Santos Famous Hunting Rifle which is the direct upgrade to it, also a world loot. You should stay on the look out for those, you'll sometimes be able to find them for cheap on the auction house because a lot of them are not that rare so there's going to be a lot of players who don't know their value who will throw them on the auction house for very cheap, so keep that in mind.
But with that this pretty much covers everything, again to quickly go over it, start by getting some good pieces of gear from quests, then move on to normal dungeons, then heroic dungeons once you're attuned, then raids, sprinkle a bit of PvP gear where you can, and then crafted, old raids, world bosses and world BOEs are all good alternatives for gearing up in World of Warcraft Classic TBC.
