Shockwave Totem is a spell totem skill that releases powerful shockwaves, causing damage to enemies in a large area around it. The first thing that we need to talk about is the weapon that's causing all of this and that is The Black Cane. This used to be a drop from the Elder Guardians, recently GGG decided to make it so that those boss drops will drop everywhere instead of just those specific bosses. So this is just a rare drop.
How does the Black Cane work?
Mostly, each Summon Phantasm grants you Fantastical Might, now Fantastical Might is a stack of 44 to 66 flat phys for spells up to level 21. So once you get to level 21, it's based on the level of Summon Phantasm, the amount of flat you get and you can have 10 phantasms. So if you have 10 phantasms out, you can have 44 to 66 added flat physical to your spells. If you are familiar with Path of Exile and how things scale, you will know that is a very hefty amount of flat. So if we take a level 20 shockwave gem, we’re almost doubling it with the scepter. This scepter is also insanely versatile because it only requires you to do two things, hit often enough with your main attack for summon phantasm, and it requires you to have a support gem open to put in some phantasms, turns out there are a lot of bad support gems in Path of Exile. There are a lot of builds that are forced to have to run bad support gems and some of them only give you 30% more damage. The support gem here, summon phantasm support almost doubles the damage, that is almost 100% more damage just for 1 support gem. This gets a little worse as you get more levels on the skill. But the reason why this is so strong is it's black physical and that can be abused in a lot of ways. So we're going to be abusing it with shockwave totem this time around, but technically you could use this on any physical spell as long as you can get comfortable enough with spamming enough summon phantasms.

If you're wondering how to craft all of this, what to do is bought items from the vendor, alt regaled them. If you alt regaled these, it would actually cost significantly more than 14 chaos, but if you were to just pick off these items up off the floor, it would cost nothing. If you are in the campaign and you just pick up items, you will have better items. The only thing that may or may not be good enough is maybe the dagger in the offhand. But there's a recipe to make this, it works with daggers too. The most expensive thing out of this entire build was the Opalescent Oil and the anoint isn't really even that required, it just gives you 30% increased damage and 5% increased damage taken from the enemies.
POE 3.21 14c Shockwave Totem Build Gameplay - How to Play Shockwave Totem Build in Path of Exile
Now that you understand the gravity of the situation of the gearing, you can learn about how the build functions. So Shockwave totem is not a new build, it's been pretty popular ever since we realized that you could use it with astral projector. This build doesn't use actual projector yet, because it is very expensive, you will use aspect projector later when you have some currency in your pocket. Another thing that these builds usually utilize right now is called a Heatshiver. So Heatshiver essentially use scale chill effect, it makes your cold damage add to your fire damage and that is the most efficient way of scaling your damage on a build. That would lead to a lot more DPS.
One thing that is a little annoying is we're not entirely sure if Heatshiver is going to be nerfed next patch. But for early on in the league like when you play this build day 1, you would be playing fire conversion, it's way easier to deal with than having to do cold conversion because one of the biggest strengths that Shockwave Totem has is there's alt quality that allows you to convert 60% of it to cold damage. Also there is an alt quality summon phantasmal that gives you 60% increase non-minion damage which make so that not only does our support give us 600 flat physical like dispels, it also gives us 60% increased damage. So we're double dipping at this point with this support once you invest into it.
