Runewords in Diablo 2 Resurrected are special combinations of specific runes that, when placed in a certain order within a socketed item, can create a new item with powerful bonuses and attributes. D2R Runewords can only be created in socketed items with the exact number of sockets required for the runeword. Each Diablo 2 runeword has a specific set of properties and bonuses that are added to the item that the runes are placed in. These bonuses can include increased damage, faster attack speed, resistance to elements, faster run/walk speed, increased chance of finding magical D2R items, and many others.

No matter in Ladder or Non-Ladder mode, Diablo 2 Resurrected runewords are worth it in any case, even if some runes are horribly rare. Some of the most popular runewords such as Insight are very high level meta, and considered the most significant in terms of gear.

D2R Runewords consist of placing Runes in a certain order in an item with slots, but there are several conditions that must be met for the word's effect to apply.  Since you can't pop runes in and out of sockets at will, it's important that you know the rules. So you avoid the unnecessary loss of runes, this are some rules you want to follow:

• Have the correct set of runes and place them in the correct order.

• Have an item of the correct type of Normal type, i.e. NOT be a Magic, Rare, Unique or Set item. The quality of the item (Low Quality, Good Quality, Exceptional, Ethereal) doesn't matter, but you're generally going to want a high tier item of the best possible quality for the tier you're aiming for. Some Normal Diablo 2 items have skill bonuses, such as Staffs, but that's okay, it's the color of the item that counts.

• The item must have just enough slots for the runic word, not too many, not too few. For example, if you need to combine 3 runes but the item has 4 slots, it will not work.

• As mentioned above, each runeword has a type of item it can be used on, for example a Staff or a Breastplate. If you attempt to use this word on the wrong type of item, there will be no special effect. So pay close attention to the item description, the advanced versions of some weapons have quite exotic names that don't make them easy to identify.

• Previously, some runic words were only active in ladder mode, online, and not in single player or simple multiplayer. That's a thing of the past, they're available in all game modes now.

• As with Diablo 2 Resurrected items, runewords have a level requirement.

As mentioned above, the perfect activation of a runeword requires not only the collection of corresponding runes, but also the equipment that can place these runes, which we call runeword bases. The following are the gear bases that can be used for D2R runewords:

• Body Armor: This is the armor that is worn on the character's chest. So it does not work on gloves, boots, etc.

• Helmet: All types of helmets, including special Barbarian, Druid, and Circlet helmets.

• Shield: Anything that blocks a blow, including the necromancer's Shrunken Heads.

• Mace: Only Mace, Morningstar, Scourge + exceptional and elite versions of these Diablo 2 items.

• Club: Cudgel, Cudgel Studded + exceptional and elite versions.

• Hammer: Warhammer, Maul, Two-Handed Maul + Exceptional and Elite versions.

• Melee weapon: Anything such as Talons that allows you to strike in melee, except Witches' Orbs.

• Scepter: Well all types of scepters, whatever their version (normal, exceptional, elite). The Delirium runeword can turn you into Bone Fetish for one minute. In this form, you can no longer use your skills and you only make normal attacks.

Since each runeword has special attributes and can only be used for specified equipment, they are used preferentially in professional builds. For example, Mosaic added in 2.6 is a Claw-based runeword, so it is obviously Exclusive to Assassin.
