Which class is best for Wrath of the Lich King Classic? It can be confusing to choose a class in WotLK that is best suited for you, you should make the decision based on several factors. So this guide is for you, we are talking about the best class in Wrath of the Lich King Classic, purely based on how they perform throughout Wrath of the Lich King and the different raid tiers.
Top 10 Best Classes In Wrath of the Lich King Classic - Overpowered WotLK DPS Classes
We detail how these classes perform across every tier in Wrath of the Lich King, ultimately coming to a decision of how they perform overall, so, for example is DK's gets a 4/10 in the tier7, a 4/10 in tier8, a 6/10 in tier9 but a 10/10 in tier10, that would get them a 6/10 in total based on these ranking points, so ultimately we are looking for a class, or perhaps several classes, that will perform decently in every single tier of Wrath of the Lich King Classic! The main goal of this guide is to give you a general look into each specific class for Wrath of the Lich King, to hopefully help you determine which class you should play in Wrath of the Lich King, and maybe help you find a class to main!
1. Top Class in Wrath of the Lich King Classic - Priests
Priests are one of the strongest classes Wrath of the Lich King in both of their roles, aka DPS and Healing. Different people will have different views on this. To rank them, put both Shadow and Disc Priests into the S-Tier when it comes to general performance throughout Wrath of the Lich King. What Shadow Priest lacks in pure damage output, it more than makes up for with all of it's other class synergies and benefits, such as Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch, contributing both healing and mana regeneration to the raid, as well as Dispersion which is the absolute highest damage reduction available in the game, which makes them perfect for soaking soakable mechanics during raids. Discipline Priests are also great healers, usually competing for top HPS on those meters, but the only reason we don't put them into the OP Tier is Holy Paladins in general are better. Some people would but Holy Paladins and Disc Priests on even ground.
Not only are Discipline Priests great because of their healing though, Discipline also excels at absorbing damage, and by going for the Inspiration Talent in the Holy Tree you also bring a 10% damage reduction, which topped with your Shields & Damage Absorbtions is enough to survive any boss mechanics out there.
2. Best Class in WOTLK Classic - Paladins
Paladins are the absolute kings of Wrath of the Lich King. Protection Paladins are amazing, Holy Paladins are amazing, and while Retribution Paladins are not going to be topping the damage meters in every single tier, they won't be at the bottom either, and they're actually quite high up there on the damage meters, especially in tier10. Tier7 and tier8 is a whole different case, but while Retribution Paladins are not good in every tiers, Protection Paladins are the best tanks throughout all of Wrath of the Lich King, with the exception of Tier 9 which is commonly known as the Death Knight Tier.
Holy Paladins become infinitely better than they have previously been due to many reasons, one of them is the access to the new Glyph systems, and Holy Paladins get a fantastic glyph called Glyph of Holy Light, which makes it so your Holy Light grants 10% of its heal amount to up to 5 friendly targets within 8 yards of the initial target. This glyph is absolutely incredible and lets you spamheal a focus target with Holy Light while still also healing other people, allowing you to pump those Healing Meters! Paladin healers are great tank healers in Wrath, and with that Glyph you can also heal some other people while focusing on the tanks.
3. WOTLK Classic Best Class - Warlocks
For this spec, put it into different Tiers for different Tiers. For the first tier of Wrath, aka Naxxramas, Warlocks actually perform quite well in both Affliction and Demonology spec, and they actually clutch in on the OP Tier. For Ulduar, it's pretty much the same story, once again ranking in at the OP Tier, but for Trial of the Crusader things start getting mixed up and Warlocks don't perform as well as other classes such as Death Knights, Marksmanship Hunters, or even Mages and Rogues, and Warlocks fall down to A-Tier, but probably at the Top of the A-Tier, closing in on S-Tier. That being said, for the last patch of Wrath of the Lich King, aka tier10 or Icecrown Citadel, Demonology Warlocks stay in the A-Tier, while Affliction Warlocks surges back up to the OP-Tier. Overall, this means that Warlocks perform at the top of the food chain for 3 out of 4 tiers in Wrath of the Lich King, and that puts them in the OP-Tier overall as well.
4. Best DPS Class in WOTLK Classic - Death Knights
The Death Knight performs quite well in Wrath of the Lich King, especially in tier9 where both Frost and Unholy are completely unmatched in DPS, seriously, you will be the kings of tier9, and even in tier7 it's really good, but in tier 8 and tier10, it's a little bit less good.
5. Overpowered Class in WOTLK Classic - Rogues
Rogues are insane, the only thing is that you are going to have to swap specs throughout the duration of Wrath, but it's better to reroll your spec than to reroll your entire class. For the first patch or tier of Wrath of the Lich King, Assassination will outperform any other Rogue Spec, and for every single patch & tier after that, Combat will outperform Assassination. So basically, play Assasination for Phase 1 of Wrath Classic, then switch to Combat as soon as Tier 8 starts. Rogues are put into the OP-Tier, right next to Warlocks, as they are consistently at the top of the damage meters in every single raid tier except tier9 which is the Death Knight Tier.
6. Druids in WOTLK Classic
Druids are all over the place in Wrath of the Lich King. Feral Druids are doing decent damage this time around which will make a lot of Druid Mains out there quite happy, Boomkins are also actually quite good as they've fixed the major mana issues that Boomkins had, to the point where you have a passive buff on your Moonkin Form which makes it so your Spell Critical Strikes have a chance to instantly regenerate 2% of your total mana. Restoration Druids also heal a lot of damage with their HoT's, and by using Glyph of Nourish, they can also get a +24% heal bonus on their Nourish abilitiy if they have both rejuvenation, regrowth, wild growth and lifebloom on the target. Restoration Druids are really strong healer on fights with consistent AoE damage that has to be outhealed, because their heals over time are incredibly strong. However, most boss fights & boss mechanics requires you to be able to spamheal through a couple specific mechanics, or reduce incoming damage of specific boss mechanics, which is where Disc Priests for Shielding and Absorbing Damage is king. Overall, we can put Druids into the high A-Tier for Wrath.
7. WOTLK Classic DPS Class - Warriors
Warriors are not really that good in early tiers, but then they are incredible in the final tiers. This is specifically for Warrior DPS, and because they scale well with gear, they won't really be brought for the early tiers in minmaxing setups, but they will definitely be brought for the final tiers. One thing to note is that it is difficult to fit Warriors into a 10man Raiding Setup, while it's easier to fit Warriors into 25man Raiding Setups, so you might want to think about that as well when choosing a class to play. A couple of things that brings Warriors up even though they have low ish dps in the early tiers, is abilities such as Shield Wall, which provides a 60% damage reduction and can be used as a back-up tank for specific boss abilities, Deep Wounds which provides an increase to physical damage taken, and Sunder Armor. In terms of Tanking, Warrior Tanks are pretty much the worst tanks in Wrath of the Lich King, and from Naxxramas until midway through Trial of the Grand Crusader, warrior dps is among the lowest performing dpses as well. However, in Icecrown Citadel there's a shift, because Warriors scale incredibly well with gear, and with ICC Gear they are able to hit their softcap for Armor Penetration, making them skyrocket on those damage meters. Overall, we can put Warriors into the B-Tier when it comes to overall performance across all of their specs throughout the entirety of Wrath of the Lich King.
8. Hunters in WOTLK Classic
They are the most overpowered classes in Wrath of the Lich King. In the early tiers, you most likely want to play Survival, and for the later tiers, you will want to swap over to Marksmanship as that scales better with gear and weapon damage, so the better gear you obtain, the more Marksmanship will outperform Survival, so in the late game of Wrath of the Lich King you definitely want to play Marksmanship. Overall, we can put Hunters into the B-Tier for Wrath of the Lich King, they could arguably go both higher and lower on this list based on who looks at it, but Hunter is one of those classes that is regarded as "easy to play, but difficult to master", and based on that the Average Person will play the Hunter to the point where it ranks at the B-Tier, while some Hunter-Experts might make it all the way up to the A-Tier.
9. Top DPS Class in WOTLK Classic - Mages
Mages are a bit like Hunters in the way that they start off with one spec in Tier 7, and then they start switching over to a different. spec as they get better and better gear. In Tier 7, Mages will be starting out as Arcane, performing as a "decent" dps, not good, not bad, but right in the middle. As you obtain more and more gear from Tier 7 Raids, you will switch over to Fire, and you will stay Fire for the rest of Wrath of the Lich King, and for the rest of Wrath, Fire Mages are good, and even having the potential to top the DPS Meters in Icecrown Citadel, being among the top 3 DPS classes - with the other two being Fury Warriors and Combat Rogues. To rank Mages for each tier, a B-Rank for Tier 7, S-Rank for Tier 8 and Tier 9, and OP-Rank for Tier 10, and overall for Wrath of the Lich King, place them into the S-Tier.
10. Shamans in WOTLK Classic - Powerful DPS Class
For Resto Shamans, once again the usual healing setup for 25man raiding will be 2 Holy Paladins, 1 Discipline Priest, 1 Resto Druid and 1 Resto Shaman, and for 10man raiding you usually bring anything but that Resto Shaman, so the need for Resto Shamans is scarce. Totems brings with them a lot of utility and buffs, which makes them a class you want to bring into a lot of raid setups, and since Shaman DPS isn't exactly the best, most people bring a Shaman Healer to get those totems. Elemental Shamans are pretty good in tier 7 but fall off drastically in later tiers, and Enhancement Shamans can be both bottom DPS and top DPS throughout the entirety of Wrath of the Lich King. Enhancement Shamans is probably the class and spec with the highest skill ceiling, where the difference between a good enhancement Shaman and a bad enhancement Shaman is huge. A good enhancement Shaman can top the dps meters, while a bad enhancement shaman would be at the literal bottom. Most Shaman DPS that are considered top DPS in Wrath of the Lich King also play a spec called Spellhancement, which is basically enhancement, but with focus on spell power and Fire Nova, as well as using Double Flametongue Weapons instead of Windfury Weapons, basically converting from attack power to spell power while still keeping the enhancement gameplay. This makes the Shaman a really difficult class to rank, but we can put it into the C-Tier and a good Shaman will be placed way higher.
