3/27/2024 11:04:11 AM

As we are entering the Season of Discovery (SoD) Phase 3, the community is buzzing with one critical question: Who is going to be the best tank? With new runes and abilities in play, let's break down each tank's potential and where they stand in the tier list.

Season of Discovery Phase 3 Tank Tier List - WoW SoD P3 Tank Best Class & Spec Ranking

In the Season of Discovery Phase 3, World of Warcraft tanks are experiencing a significant shift in their capabilities with the introduction of new runes. Warriors are showing resilience with the addition of Shield Mastery and the potentially meta-defining Vigilance rune, which can revolutionize threat management by leveraging the output of high-threat DPS classes. Paladins are looking more potent than ever, with runes that might allow for critical strikes on spells, greatly enhancing their AOE and single-target threat. Meanwhile, Shaman tanks continue to hold a strong position with runes that synergize with their spellcasting, further cementing their spot at the top. Warlock tanks emerge as dark horses with runes that significantly increase their fire damage output and AOE threat. However, the fate of Rogue and Druid tanks hangs in the balance, pending the reveal of new runes that could either boost their viability or leave them trailing behind other classes. With these changes, the tank meta in WoW is poised for a shake-up, promising a fresh landscape for group content and raid encounters. Now let's check out the new meta Tank tier list for Season of Discovery Phase 3:

  • 1. Protection Paladin (S-Tier)

Paladins are already formidable tanks with impressive DPS and threat management. Improved Sanctuary rune absorbs damage and deals additional damage based on block value, though it may not be as impressive as anticipated. Rat enables Consecration and other holy spells to critically strike, which could make Protection Paladins the strongest tanks in AOE situations. With the ability to use both Protection and Retribution runes effectively, Paladins could see an incredible boost in their tanking prowess.

  • 2. Shaman Tank (S-Tier)

Shaman tanks have consistently been at the top of the tanking hierarchy, and nothing indicates that this is about to change. Mental Dexterity rune converts intellect into additional attack power and a portion of attack power into spell damage and healing. This enhances the Shaman's ability to generate threat through spellcasting. Given their already formidable tanking abilities, Shamans are likely to remain a dominant force, especially as we await the reveal of additional runes.

  • 3. Warrior Tank (A Tier)

Despite some popular misconceptions, Warriors are far from obsolete. They are versatile, with the ability to hold their ground against fierce opponents such as Enhancement Shamans. Warriors boast dependable tankiness, so much so that some players have successfully solo-tanked Onyxia without assistance. Warriors also bring a solid damage output, contributing around 400 DPS, particularly when buffed with Bloodlust (BL). Shield Mastery rune increases damage by 10% when using a shield, translating into more threat and rage generation. Vigilance is the standout rune allows Warriors to take 10% of the threat generated by another player, reducing that player's threat by the same amount. This rune scales incredibly well, especially with DPS classes prone to generating excess threat. While some other runes like Sword and Board and Wrecking Crew may not be as impactful, Warriors remain a top choice for tanks, potentially becoming the best in the game for threat management.

  • 4. Warlock Tank (A Tier)

Warlocks are becoming a more attractive tanking class, especially for the Alliance. With runes that enhance their fire spells and AOE capabilities, Warlock tanks are set to make a significant impact. Backdraft rune boosts Conflagrate's haste by 30%, leading to a substantial increase in threat generation. Immol AA acts similarly to Consecration, providing consistent AOE threat.

  • 5. Rogue Tank (B Tier)

Rogues are a playable tank option, though they tend to be inconsistent. Their mitigation can be hit-or-miss, sometimes avoiding all damage and other times being burst down unexpectedly. The news runes revealed for Rogues so far offer minor benefits, such as additional energy or combo points, but nothing revolutionary. The final verdict on Rogues as tanks in Phase 3 remains inconclusive until we see more.

  • 6. Bear (Druid) Tank (C Tier)

Unfortunately, Bears have been struggling to maintain viability. Despite buffs like a 10% increase to Swipe's attack power scaling, they fall short in performance. One interesting rune, Gore, offers a 15% chance to reset Mangle's cooldown when using other abilities like Lacerate. The potential to use Lacerate alongside Mangle could be a game-changer for Bear tanks if implemented correctly.

While the Druid and Rogue tanks hinge on future rune developments, the Warrior, Shaman, Warlock, and Paladin have clear paths to success in the new season. For those considering which tank to play, it's recommended to steer clear of Druid and Rogue unless they receive substantial upgrades with the upcoming runes.
