Diablo 4 Occultist & How to Unlock
The Occultist is a vendor that specializes in enchantments. An Occultist can upgrade items with Legendary affixes, reroll item affixes through enchanting, and forge Nightmare Sigils for endgame players.
How do you unlock the occultist in Diablo 4?
Players can unlock the Occultist by completing the Occultist's vendor quest, available at level 25 or by unlocking the Codex of Power. The latter occurs upon completing any dungeon in Sanctuary that awards an affix your character can use. Once you've unlocked the Occultist's services, you can find them in the northern portion of Kyovoshad, denoted by a triangle icon on your map. Most major Act hubs include an Occultist, not just Kyovashad.
How to Extract and Imprint Aspects in Diablo 4?
In Diablo 4, aspects are powerful passive abilities that can be added to your gear. They can be extracted from legendary gear, and then imprinted on other gear to give it a new aspect.
In order to extract a legendary aspect, you will need to visit the Occultist in any major town. He will be able to extract the aspect from any legendary item, but it will destroy the item in the process. And we must first have a legendary item in our inventory or on our character if we want to extract a legendary aspect. We can click and drag it into the slot or right-click it and we will get a legendary aspect equivalent to whatever legendary power is on that legendary. So if it's a high roll, you'll remain a high roll, if it's a low roll, it will remain a low roll. It will not change between this process. If we go ahead and extract this aspect, we will destroy the legendary item, so make sure it's something that you don't care about. You also note that the lower level legendary items require less gold and less resources compared to the higher level legendary items to extract. After we go ahead and click the extract aspect button, we will go ahead and find this legendary aspect in our aspects tab of our inventory. We can actually place these in the stash if you get too many. There are also 4 different types of legendary aspects: defensive, offensive, utility and resource. These 4 only have a small subsection of gear that they can be applied to. For example, the offensive one can only be applied to the weapons, gloves and jewelry. But the resource ones can only be applied to rings, this is very important to note because it really determines where you want your aspects placed in your build.
Once you have extracted an aspect, you can imprint it on any other piece of gear. To do this, simply visit the Occultist and select the aspect you want to imprint. He will then imprint the aspect onto the gear, and it will be permanently added to the item. Unique items cannot be modified. Codex of Power Aspects can be applied indefinitely, while regularly extracted legendary aspects are consumed when imprinted onto an item. An item can only be imprinted once!
How to Craft & Salvage Nightmare Sigils in Diablo 4?
Then we talk about crafting and salvaging Nightmare sigils, a type of crafting material that is used to upgrade Legendary items. We can unlock these tabs after completing a couple of nightmare dungeons which seems to be how you unlock this. The first tab is salvaging sigils, this one is pretty straightforward before we get to crafting one, we want to get some sort of resource and you're going to get the sigil powder which is the resource needed to craft it. Either from doing various content in the game including things like just going through and completing nightmare dungeons or salvaging your previous acquired nightmare sigils which you will get from doing dungeons or higher World tiers, general and often times in your grand caches from the tree of whispers.
When you go ahead and salvage them, they are based upon the tier. For example, if you salvage a tier 7 one or a tier 8 one, you can get two by salvage a tier 1 or tier 2, you are still going to get two. But as you raise higher and higher and if you craft one like a tier 81, you can go ahead and salvage that one for way higher sigil powder. So the higher tier ones are going to give you higher sigil powder. The sacred ones are going to be 1 to 20 and the ancestral ones are going to be 21 to 100 which will also be reflected in the crafting tab.
Crafting is pretty straightforward, you'll see the nightmare sigil, you'll see what can potentially be created at, and the amount of afflictions or affixes that you'll get according to that. The sigil powder cost increases as you go higher in the tiers and on top of all that, this is not guaranteed to be a specific tier, it will be a range always, it's completely random in that range. So often times you're going to want to craft a specific nightmare sigil according to the tier that you're looking to finish. These will also be random in terms of the dungeons that you would be able to run. So there's a limited amount of dungeons that you will be able to acquire nightmare sigils for. However, you will always get a random one according to the ones you craft.
Diablo 4 Enchanting Items
Enchanting is basically re-rolling certain affects of one of your gear pieces. It cost quite a bit of resources and in fact, oftentimes you're not going to be able to acquire these resources relatively easily as you approach later on in the game. If you put in a lower-level item, you only have to use a lower-level crafting materials. But the higher level items you go, the higher level crafting materials you need.
Conclusion
The Occultist is an incredibly important vendor for progressing your character's power.
Imprinting legendary aspects add massive boosts to your damage and survivability.
The Codex of Power gives you access to a specific list of imprintable aspects to get you started. They always roll the lowest value, but are still worth the gold cost.
Extracting legendary aspects from gear allows you to select the best gear-slot to put it on once you have a good base.
Sigils can be crafted and salvaged at the Occultist. These open Nightmare Dungeons and add "Afflictions", which add additional difficulty to the content.
Enchanting your gear replaces a single affix with another affix that can roll on that item. Once you enchant an affix you can only reroll that stat moving forward.
