With Diablo 4 Season 9 Sins of the Horadrim launching on Tuesday, July 1st, it's time to update the Diablo 4 Season 9 Tier List to see which classes are the best to play and the best builds across all classes for leveling and endgame!
Season 9 introduces a number of balance updates, unique item changes, and scaling adjustments. Monster health scaling in higher Pit tiers has been slightly reduced, making it more feasible for a wider range of builds to reach Pit 100 and beyond.
New uniques and class-specific buffs and nerfs have shifted the meta. Some builds that dominated in Season 8 have been heavily nerfed, while others, like Hydra Sorcerer and Thorns Spiritborn, have emerged as powerful contenders. The Armory system also greatly enhances build swapping, making it easier to experiment without major setbacks.
After analyzing the latest patch notes and in-game testing, here's a full ranking of all six classes from best to worst, with ratings for both leveling and endgame performance:
1. Spiritborn
Leveling: 9/10
Endgame: 10/10
The Spiritborn class is the clear front-runner going into Season 9. Its new Thorns-enhancing pants synergize incredibly well with a wide range of builds. The standout is once again Quill Volley, which cleared Pit 115 in under 4 minutes on the PTR with room to spare.
Even with a potential fix to the double-dipping bug affecting damage multipliers, Spiritborn is expected to remain dominant, likely clearing Pit 110+. Its flexibility, fun factor, and raw power put it at the top of the meta.
2. Sorcerer
Leveling: 8/10
Endgame: 9.5/10
The Hydra Sorcerer build is shaping up to be the most popular and visually spectacular option this season. Despite relying on double-dipping interactions, even without them, its damage potential stays very high, with Pit 105+ clear capability.
Hydra is the clear highlight, but other builds like Ice Shards, Blizzard, Chain Lightning, and Lightning Spear fall short in comparison. Still, teleport mobility and high DPS make Sorcerer a fan-favorite and a top-tier choice.
3. Necromancer
Leveling: 7.5/10
Endgame: 9/10
Necros retain strong builds from previous seasons. Blood Wave is once again among the top endgame setups, achieving clears up to Pit 107. There's also promise in new builds like the Shadow DoT Corruption Necro, showing similar potential.
The Summon Skeletal Mage build has seen buffs and is now sitting at the top of A-tier, nearly S-tier. This gives pet lovers hope for a fully viable summon-focused necro.
While it's not new ground, the power is undeniable — Necro remains a top-3 class.
4. Barbarian
Leveling: 7/10
Endgame: 7.5/10
Barbs had a brief moment of glory on PTR due to a bleed bug enabling a Pit 150 clear, but that’s expected to be fixed. Without it, the class relies on slightly outdated builds like Pet Earthquake and Twister variants, both of which are fun but not meta-defining.
The most promising build is Lunging Strike Barb, which offers a fast-paced, controller-friendly playstyle. However, it barely breaks into A-tier and needs buffs to basic and core skills to compete at the top.
5. Rogue
Leveling: 6.5/10
Endgame: 7/10
Rogues are in a rough spot. Their Death Trap build remains viable and can clear Pit 105 with effort, but it's the same as previous metas with targeted nerfs slowing it down. The new unique helm is underwhelming and offers no real excitement or innovation.
Without buffs to Flurry and the new gear, the Rogue doesn't bring anything new or particularly strong to the table this season, making it a low-priority pick.
6. Druid
Leveling: 6/10
Endgame: 6.5/10
Sadly, the Druid is at the bottom again. Once-powerful builds like Cataclysm and Overpower have been heavily nerfed, leaving the class in a weak state. Small 10% buffs haven’t done enough to revitalize it.
The Flesh Renderer Druid is a flashier option and likely the best Druid build available right now, potentially reaching low S-tier with the right setup. However, overall, the class lacks strength and variety, and remains overnerfed and underperforming.
This tier list is based on extensive PTR testing, updated patch notes, and community feedback. While changes may still occur, this ranking offers a solid snapshot of the most powerful and viable builds heading into the new season. Each build is rated for both Leveling and Endgame, and ranked from S-Tier (the best) down to B-Tier (viable but weaker). The top tier builds on the list that can comfortably clear Pit 105+ and are the strongest options for both farming and pushing.
1. Thorns Spiritborn (Quill Volley / Crushing Hands)
Leveling: 8/10
Endgame: 10/10
This build leverages the Thorns Pantaloons and Jaguar Mainhall double-dip bug, enabling insane damage. It cleared Pit 115 on PTR and remains dominant even with nerfs. Two viable variants: glass-cannon with Quill Volley or tankier using Crushing Hands.
2. Hydra Sorcerer (Direct & DoT Variants)
Leveling: 10/10
Endgame: 9.5/10
Hydra is back and better than ever. The direct damage version excels early, while the dot variant is stronger for pushing. With buffs to runes and spell speed, it's now a top-tier farming and bossing build, and arguably the most fun and popular build this season.
3. Bloodwave Necromancer
Leveling: 8/10
Endgame: 9.5/10
Despite Overpower nerfs, Bloodwave remains a powerhouse, achieving Pit 107 pre-nerf. It’s still capable of Pit 105+, making it one of the strongest Necro builds yet again.
4. Shadow DoT Necromancer
Leveling: 7.5/10
Endgame: 9/10
The Shadow Damage over Time build using Corrupting Wave and Affliction passive did Pit 103 and is likely to hit 105+ post-buffs. It’s a strong alternative to Bloodwave with excellent synergy through Horadric powers.
5. Touch of Death Spiritborn (Craze of the Dead God)
Leveling: 3/10
Endgame: 9.5/10
An extremely high-skill build, pulling off Pit 118 on PTR. However, it's not recommended for casual players, as it lacks farming utility and is only viable for pushing high-end content.
6. Summon Mage Necromancer
Leveling: 7.5/10
Endgame: 8.5/10
A buffed pet build relying solely on skeletal mages. Already cleared Pit 101, and with improvements to minion scaling, it may reach true S-tier status soon.
7. Poison Pulverize Druid
Leveling: 8/10
Endgame: 8.5/10
This new Druid build uses stacked poison puddles and guaranteed Overpower to dish out massive damage. It’s the highest-rated Druid build, sitting at the top of A-Tier.
8. Companion Druid (Werewolf)
Leveling: 7.5/10
Endgame: 8/10
Fixes to Aspect of the Alpha and summon buffs make this wolf-focused summoning build feel strong. Cleared Pit 94 pre-buff, with Pit 100 well within reach.
9. Flash Renderer Druid
Leveling: 7/10
Endgame: 8/10
A shout-heavy, Overpower-based build that’s fast and flashy. Post-nerf, it still clears Pit 100 and is a fun, button-mashing option for Druid fans.
10. Poison Twisting Blades Rogue
Leveling: 7/10
Endgame: 8/10
Buffs to Imbuement passives make this a strong alternative to Death Trap. It’s the top A-tier Rogue build, capable of Pit high-90s.
11. Death Trap Rogue
Leveling: 7/10
Endgame: 8/10
A returning meta favorite, now nerfed but still viable. While no longer dominant, it can still push Pit 95–98 with good gear.
12. Chain Lightning Sorcerer
Leveling: 8/10
Endgame: 7.5/10
Still viable with Pit 103 clears, but overshadowed by Hydra. Decent for farming and leveling, but struggles in top-tier content.
13. Meteor Sorcerer
Leveling: 7.5/10
Endgame: 7.5/10
Similar to Chain Lightning, solid, but not spectacular. Good utility and flexible damage, but not enough to break into S-tier.
14. Quill Volley Spiritborn
Leveling: 6.5/10
Endgame: 8/10
Still strong post-nerf, with Pit 108 performance before Overpower changes. Remains a safe pick for Spirit players outside of the Thorns meta.
15. Evade Spiritborn
Leveling: 9/10
Endgame: 6.5/10
A fast, fun farmer, great for early-game and glyph leveling. Lacks high-end pushing power, but is excellent as a starter build with a smooth transition into S-tier variants.
16. Lunging Strike Barbarian
Leveling: 8/10
Endgame: 6.5/10
The best Barbarian build, but still underwhelming. Barely manages Pit 90–95 with top gear. Good boss killer, but limited pushing potential.
17. Flay Barbarian / Mighty Throw / Earthquake
Leveling: 6.5/10
Endgame: 6/10
All severely nerfed. Earthquake is no longer viable. These builds are struggling and not recommended unless heavily buffed post-launch.
18. Flurry Rogue (Mech Helm)
Leveling: 6/10
Endgame: 6/10
A new build with a new helm, but underwhelming in testing. Lacks damage and scaling to be competitive with other Rogue options.
