Madden 21 is just a few months away, so everyone in the Madden community starts wondering who's going to be on the cover of the Madden 22. Some of us want our favorite players to be on the cover because it's good recognition but a lot of us don't want our favorite players to be on the cover because of the dreaded curse. Now for the last two years the Madden cover got leaked a little bit early and though it was not confirmed for a while both times it wound up being true, and the same thing seems to have happened again, this year so we almost certainly know who's going to be on the Madden 22 cover.
Here we go over the top five candidates that could land on the cover for Madden NFL 22 before revealing the leaked cover which is almost certainly the actual cover.
Top 5 - Aaron Rodgers
The first candidate for the Madden 22 cover none other than one of the best quarterbacks of all time - Aaron Rodgers, he would make a great candidate for more than one reason. Frist, he is the reigning MVP and we've seen the last two years EA has put the reigning MVP on the cover. Now it's also crazy to think that Aaron Rodgers's never been on the cover of Madden when he plays the most important position, he's one of the best to ever play it and he has a huge market behind him in green bay one of the biggest fan bases in the NFL, so putting him on the cover would make a lot of sense marketing wise. The one thing that is working against him is that EA has never put the same position on the Madden cover three years in a row and the last two years have both been quarterbacks with Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. It also appears that they're trying to go a little bit younger on the cover as well over the last two years but if you look at some of the previous years before that they did go with older players.
Top 4 - Justin Herbert
We are going to stick with the quarterback position one more time and go with Justin Herbert on the number four of the list. The main reason we think Justin Herbert is a top candidate is because he had the best rookie season we've ever seen from a quarterback, and we have seen a couple times in the past when a player has a big enough rookie season EA will put him on the cover the next year, such as Vince Young on Madden 08 and Odell Beckham on Madden 16. Justin Herbert surprised everybody last year breaking multiple records just going absolutely crazy for a rookie quarterback, so it would make sense to put him on the cover but then again like we said about Aaron Rodgers.
The thing working against him here is the fact that there have been quarterbacks on the covers for the last two years and typically from the past it seems that EA does not want to stick with the same position over and over, they do like to switch it up every couple of years.
Top 3 - Aaron Donald
Aaron Donald is getting the bigger possibilities to be the cover of Madden 22. There has not been a defensive player on the cover of the game for a while, and it seems like EA Sports likes to do this every four to five years - they'll put a defensive player on the cover. We had Ray Lewis on Madden 05 and Troy Palamalu on Madden 10 who shared the cover with Larry Fitzgerald, then a few years later in Madden 15, we had Richard Sherman. So we're about in that time frame where it does make sense to put a defensive player on the cover again, and the one thing that has been consistent with defensive players on the cover of Madden is when they do it it's always the unanimous best defensive player in the league. Right now Aaron Donald as of the last few years has been one of the most dominant defensive players we've ever seen and he just won another defensive player of the year award, so if they're going to go the defensive route you better believe Aaron Donald is the one and only choice for this position.
Top 2 - Christian McCaffrey
A running back has not been on the cover of the game since Madden 25 which dates all the way back to 2014. Now running backs used to grace the cover of Madden all the time, you had Eddie George in 2001, Marshall Falcon in 2003, Sean Alexander in 2007 and the list goes on. But it's been so many years since we've seen a running back on the cover and the position isn't what it used to be, it's definitely a pass heavy league, you don't see a lot of bell cow running backs anymore. But that doesn't mean that there aren't those new age running backs like a Christian McCaffrey that does a lot in the passing game and you can also maybe even throw Alvin Kamara on this list as well as another young exciting running back that would make sense for the cover. But there are some reasons we are leaning Christian McCaffrey here. Before he got hurt he was considered the unanimous best running back in the league, coming off of a year that was offensive player of the year worthy and the only reason he didn't win it is because Michael Thomas broke a record. He also wears the Number 22 which could just be a little marketing thing EA would try to do. Though they've never actually done that in the past, if you kind of notice the way EA's been marketing over the past few years, they've been getting a little cornier in doing those types of things.
Top 1 - Derrick Henry
There's multiple reasons why Derrick Henry will be on the cover of Madden 22. Again, he wears the number 22 so they have an easy little marketing slogan right there. Then in terms of being just a pure rusher, most people would probably say he's the best in the league. The way Derrick Henry's played over these past two to three years has just been absolutely incredible and last year was his best yet going over 2 000 yards something that we have not seen many players do. On top of all that, the running back position is in the biggest drought of Madden cover history. In the past few years we've seen quarterbacks, wide receiver, defensive player, tight end on the cover, it seems like it's time to go back to the running back position for the Madden cover and what better time than taking a player that just went over 2 000 yards. But even with all that aside, here's the biggest reason he's going to be the cover athlete, because Gamestop kind of leaked it early with the pre-order picture that they had in one of their stores. You could say that they could put anybody on this picture and this doesn't mean anything, but when you look at the past two to three years, they've done the same thing in Madden 21 - they had a picture of Lamar Jackson on this same promotional picture in their store to get early pre-orders in for the new sports games and Lamar Jackson wound up being on the cover the year; before that they did the same thing with Patrick mahomes. All these reasons make perfect sense why Derrick Henry will be on the cover of Madden 22.
So these are the Top 5 Candidates of Madden 22 Cover Athlete, now there are other rumors going around such as Madden 22 might actually be coming to the Nintendo Switch and a popular mode will come back, anyway, we hope EA Sports will bring more surprises to us in Madden NFL 22.
