Let’s break down everything already known about the WoW Season of Discovery Phase 6, including the release date, new content (raid, BiS gear, runes, PvP changes, etc.), and some valuable tips on preparing for the new phase!
Before diving into the release date for Phase 6, let's review the historical durations of previous phases:
Phase 1: ~10 weeks
Phase 2: ~8 weeks
Phase 3: ~14 weeks
Phase 4: ~11 weeks
Phase 5: Expected to be 8-12 weeks
Given this, we're now in Phase 5, which started on September 26, 2024. Based on previous trends, Phase 6 could arrive within the 8 to 12-week cycle. With major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas on the horizon, Blizzard has to carefully schedule the launch.
UPDATED! The WoW Season of Discovery Phase 6 release date is set on November 12, 2024!
Here’s the official timeline for Phase 6 as revealed by World of Warcraft:
November 12: The Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline begins with regional resets.
November 21: The gates of Ahn'Qiraj will open, and the raid content will officially be live.
November 29: The War Effort ends, regardless of player contributions.
December 4: The War Heralding event begins, leading up to the raid releases on December 6.
December 6: The Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj, and Nightmare Grove open.
Both the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline and the War Effort are key to unlocking the Ahn'Qiraj raids. Players who complete the questline between 1 PM PST on December 4 and 11 PM PST on December 6 will receive the Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal, which summons the Black Qiraji Battle Tank, an iconic and rare mount from the original WoW.
Phase 6 brings a plethora of exciting content for the Season of Discovery (SoD), with new raids, events, and reputation systems. Here's a breakdown of what to expect.
1. The Scepter of the Shifting Sands Questline
The Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline, also known as the Scarab Lord questline, kicks off on November 12. This is one of the most iconic and grueling questlines in WoW history, requiring players to gather rare materials and fight powerful bosses. The ultimate goal is to ring the gong and open the gates of Ahn'Qiraj, earning the Scarab Lord title and the aforementioned Black Qiraji Battle Tank.
While the questline used to be a race against time, it seems Blizzard is making it more accessible this time around. Whether or not I’ll personally grind for it remains to be seen—farming for Scarab Lord back in the day was intense, and I’m not sure I’m up for it this time.
The War Effort is the global event where both the Horde and Alliance work together to gather resources and prepare for the opening of Ahn'Qiraj. Players will be able to contribute materials to earn Alliance Commendation Signets or Horde Commendation Signets, which can be exchanged for useful items.
However, Blizzard has decided to put the War Effort on a hard timer—meaning it will end on November 29, regardless of player participation. This removes the old-world race to gather materials and ensures that the gates will open in a timely manner.
On December 6, the following raids will open:
Temple of Ahn'Qiraj (AQ40): The infamous 40-player raid is back, and expectations are high, though concerns about difficulty and hard modes are looming.
Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj (AQ20): Now reconfigured as a 10-player raid, AQ20 offers a more accessible experience for smaller groups.
Nightmare Grove: A brand-new raid featuring the Dragons of Nightmare: Emeriss, Lethon, Taerar, and Ysondre. This raid uses the incursion mechanic to allow players to teleport between bosses, offering a unique experience compared to the original content.
The Nightmare Grove
The Nightmare Grove is a 4-boss raid where players will fight one of the Dragons of Nightmare in the Emerald Dream. The bosses rotate depending on which grove players enter first, utilizing Blizzard’s incursion technology, similar to previous world bosses like Kazzak and Azuregos. This is a fresh addition to WoW Classic, and although the incursion system has had mixed reviews, this new content could offer something exciting for veteran players.
Blizzard is introducing a new hard mode system in AQ40. After defeating each boss, players will have the option to enable more challenging mechanics in exchange for better loot. But there’s a catch: if your raid wipes too many times, you may walk away with nothing. This “risk vs. reward” system adds another layer of difficulty and tension to the raid.
Personally, I’m not thrilled about this. Sure, it’s great to have some challenge, but adding mechanics that could result in no loot at all feels punishing, especially for more casual players. This could create a lot of frustration, particularly in pick-up groups (PuGs) where coordination and gear aren’t always optimal.
As we await Phase 6, there are several things you can do to prepare and get ahead.
1. Logistics Assignment Quests
With Phase 6, the Ahn'Qiraj War Effort will require players to complete various logistics quests. You'll need to stockpile resources like:
Dense Stone, Heavy Stone, and Solid Stone
Mooncloth, Runecloth, and Ironweb Spider Silk
Enchanted Thorium and Enchanted Leather
Powerful Anti-Venom and Smoked Desert Dumplings
Tip: Start farming these materials now, or visit the Auction House to stockpile them before prices skyrocket.
2. Sandworm Meat & Smoked Desert Dumplings
Smoked Desert Dumplings are a must-have for melee classes. To prepare:
Farm Sandworm Meat from Dredge Crushers and Dredge Strikers in Silithus.
Complete the quest from the Silithus Innkeeper to unlock the recipe.
Tip: Sandworm Meat will be heavily farmed once Phase 6 launches, so farm it now while competition is low.
3. Greater Nature Protection Potions
These potions are essential for surviving the nature damage in AQ40:
Farm Elemental Earth in Badlands or Arathi Highlands.
Gather Dreamfoil and Crystal Vials to craft the potions.
Tip: Stock up on Greater Nature Protection Potions now before demand spikes.
Phase 6 promises to be one of the most exciting phases in Season of Discovery, with epic raids, legendary questlines, and server-wide events that will engage the entire player base.
Whether you're preparing for the Ahn'Qiraj War Effort, gathering materials for Logistics Assignments, or farming reputation for Cenarion Circle and Brood of Nozdormu, now is the time to get ready.
