In this guide, we bring you a detailed comparison between Axes, Hammers, and Flails weapons in Elden Ring and answer any questions that you would expect that would come along with comparing these 3 types of weapons such as what are their strengths and weaknesses, what are their varieties, movesets, ashes of war options, and which weapon is better for PvE/PvP Elden Ring 1.09.

Elden Ring Best PvP/PvE Weapons 1.09 Patch - Axes Vs Hammers Vs Flails, Which Is Better

These three are just very similar in how they work, they have very similar range, damage and move sets. Now some people complain about them because they're so bad in this outclass by almost any other type of weapon class in this game, they need more range, they need more stagger potential and they need more poise damage as well. But for this guide, we are going to have a bunch of different categories, pick them up against each other and try and figure out which one is better!

Difference Between Axes, Hammers, and Flails Weapons

Axe Weapon

Axes are a type of one-handed weapon in Elden Ring that are known for their high damage output and speed. They are good for players who prefer to be quick and agile in combat. Axes are effective against enemies with low armor or those that are susceptible to bleed damage. They also have a high critical hit rate and can deal a significant amount of damage with a single strike. However, axes have a shorter range compared to other weapons and may not be as effective against heavily armored enemies.

Hammer Weapon

Hammers are a type of two-handed weapon in Elden Ring that are known for their high damage output and heavy impact. They are good for players who prefer a slower, more deliberate approach to combat. Hammers are effective against heavily armored enemies and can stagger them with their powerful attacks. They also have a longer reach compared to axes and can deal more damage per hit. However, hammers are slower and require more stamina to use effectively.

Flail Weapon

Flails are a type of two-handed weapon in Elden Ring that are known for their versatility and unique attack patterns. They are good for players who prefer to be unpredictable in combat. Flails have a longer range compared to axes and hammers and can hit enemies from a distance. They are also effective against enemies with shields, as their attacks can bypass the enemy's defense. However, flails have a slower attack speed and require more precision to use effectively.

Elden Ring Axes Vs Hammers Vs Flails Variety

Axes

The variety itself is not too bad, have things that have differing movesets in the hand axe, the warped axe and the iron cleaver as well. Have decent strength and dexterity options mixed throughout, have an okay intelligence based option, have something that has a very decent and unique ash of war in the stormhawk axe, something an arcane option that can be buffed, so it makes it very good for status back builds. Something good for casting based build in the sacrificial axe, something for strike damage as well. So overall, we can end up giving this one an A tier in its variety.

Hammers

As for the Hammers, they're also pretty good in terms of its variety to have stuff with differing movesets in the occult morning star, morning star also gets inherent bleed as well which is very good, something that actually does piercing damage in the warpick. Have an arcane option that can be buffed in the varre’s bouquet although. Do have a decent dexterity option in the monk’s flamemace. Do have decent faith options in the envoy’s horn and marika’s hammer. Have an intelligence based option instead of the all-knowing and things that have very different types of ash of war options in the nox flowing hammer in the ring timer. So overall, we can put this one into the S tier.

Flails

As for the flails, they're not going to be as good as only five of them, only have two things that can not be infused and they both are scaled with both intelligence. They're okay as well, but you don't have anything that has differing movesets, you don’t have something for strength and dexterity, they all get blade. So give it a C tier.

Is Axe or Hammer & Flail better? We should go towards the Hammers in terms of winning out of variety.

Elden Ring Axes Vs Hammers Vs Flails Moveset

They're just all exactly the same, like the light attack combo, nothing but horizontal swipes. The heavy attacks are exactly the same, rolling, running, jumping attacks, power stance, it's just all identical, there's actually only a couple of slight differences and that's the Hammers and Axes get a 5 hit light attack combo and the Flails for whatever reason only get a 4. There's also another difference in the Axes, jumping power stance attack, it does like 1 hit after the other Warriors for the Hammers and Flails they hit at the exact same time. So the Hammers should actually win this one out because they just have the better moveset, but they're all just so bad and so mid like one hit after the other with a power stance moveset is so bad for how little stagger damage they're actually doing, how much little posture damage that the power stance movesets actually do get, for how slow they are is really not that great. The range is bad, it's just all of it no variety in this moveset, nothing that's good in this game is what these actual weapons have. So we should give all of these a D tier.

Elden Ring Axes Vs Hammers Vs Flails Ash of War

This one's just as useless as the movesets in terms of comparing them to one another, because every single one gets the exact same ash of war. Their only difference is that the Axes do get spinning slash and it is actually a very decent ash of war especially for smaller base weapons that don't actually stagger. We should give a C tier to the Flails and the Hammers, but the Axes mean that they actually do have spinning slash which is pretty decent, so give this one a B tier.

Best Weapons for PvE in Elden Ring 1.09

Here are the top 10 best PvE weapon builds for Elden Ring 1.09:

  • Stone Club

  • Morning Star

  • Bastards Stars

  • Nightrider Flail

  • Nox Flowing

  • Jawbone Axe

  • Stormhawk Axe

  • Highland Axe

  • Iron Cleaver

  • Warped Axe

We should lean more towards the Hammers as being the better PvE options because the stone club is an amazing weapon, it has a really good light attack combo, obviously striking damage, really good posture damage as well, has decent range. The morning star is going to be a very solid blade option that also does get a very unique type of moveset and decent bass damage as well. As for the flails, the base flail is better than the base hammer and the base axe because they do have inherent blade and they do get just as much poise damage as hammers do. But the bastards stars is probably the best option of the bunch because it does have a very good ash of war. As for the axes themselves, they actually only get standard damage which is not really that great in PvE, because strike damage is a lot more beneficial and these things don't actually do as much poison damage as hammers do. So the hammers is going to end up winning out. But in terms of actually giving them a tier list, we can give the hammers about a B tier and give the axes and flails a C tier.

Best Weapons for PvP in Elden Ring 1.09

Here are the top 10 best PvP weapon builds for Elden Ring 1.09:

  • Iron Cleaver

  • Stormhawk Axe

  • Warped Axe

  • Hand Axe

  • Ripple Blade

  • Stone Club

  • Marikas Hammer

  • Ringed Finger

  • Envoys Horn

We can aim the best PvP weapon to the axes, because they actually have very decent types of options. The iron cleaver which gets a very similar attack or light attack combo as the stone club, but it gets us a much better heavy attack for PvP. The stormhawk axe is definitely one of the better ashes for dueling as well. And things like the warpped decks and the hand axe get very unique light attack combos and the ripple blade is one of the better status effect type weapons in the entire game as well.
