Diablo 4 Season 9 Best Rune Farms - How & Where To Farm Legendary Runes in D4 S9?

7/29/2025 2:13:42 PM

Farming legendary runes in Diablo 4 Season 9 has become a central goal for many players, especially after changes to drop rates and new methods introduced with the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Below, we’ll cover the most efficient methods to get legendary runes, highlight the best locations, and explain the conversion system that can help you turn lower-tier runes into legendaries.

Diablo 4 Season 9 Best Rune Farms - How & Where To Farm Legendary Runes

1. Tribute of Harmony and the Kurast Under City

The top method for farming legendary runes is using the Tribute of Harmony in the Kurast Under City. After obtaining a Tribute of Harmony, commonly earned by completing Pit runs, especially in groups where only one person needs to use the tribute to open the run, players can open the Kurast Under City and face the end boss. This boss has a chance to drop multiple runes, making this run the most efficient source available.

Be sure to interact with the various objects and enemies within the Under City to fill the progress bar quickly. You'll encounter enemies with hourglasses that extend your time, and defeating special monsters like goblins can net you extra chests and, occasionally, more runes. The more enemies defeated, the faster the progress bar fills, unlocking higher reward ranks, with Rank 4 offering the best rune rewards.

One practical tip: if you’re running as a group, you only need one Tribute of Harmony per opening, allowing everyone to benefit from the boss drop.

If you run out of Tributes of Harmony, other tributes can be used in the Under City, but these tend to yield only a single rune per run.

2. Cave District Bug - A High-Yield Method (PC Only)

Players have discovered a bug in the Cave District of the Kurast Under City that allows you to obtain boss rewards multiple times per run. The process involves intentionally dying just before the boss dies. If timed correctly, your character is teleported out of the boss room while still receiving loot, and the boss respawns, letting you repeat the process a few times for significantly more runes.

This method is most consistent in the Cave District and is easier to execute with a Hydra Sorceress, as the hydra can finish off the boss while you manage your own health. While you can attempt this bug in other districts, the success rate is much lower. It's important to remember that after three or four repetitions, the boss will stop dropping loot, so this method cannot be looped indefinitely.

This technique also works with other tribute types, like Tribute of Ascendance (for mythic uniques) and Tribute of Radiance (for ancestral legendaries), provided you get the right district. However, using this method can result in wasting tributes if the correct district doesn’t appear, so casual players are advised to complete the run regardless of the district they receive.

3. Farming Lair (Coven) Bosses

The next-best source for legendary runes is farming layer bosses. The drop rate of runes from these bosses is influenced by both the tournament level and the boss tier. Billay offers the highest chance, followed by tier 2 bosses like the Harbinger of Hatred, Duriel, and Andariel, and then tier 1 bosses such as Urivar and Van.

These bosses can be farmed by collecting or crafting their summoning materials, and focusing on the bosses that drop items you need can help maximize the value of each run.

4. Group Play for Efficient Farming

Farming in groups is highly recommended. When running the Pit for Tributes of Harmony, only one player needs to use a tribute to open the run, allowing the entire party to benefit from the rewards. Coordinating with others can help you accumulate tributes and runes much faster than solo play.

5. Rune Conversion: Upgrading to Legendary

Another important aspect of rune farming is the conversion system. At the Jeweler, you can combine three of the same rare runes into another rare rune, with a 15% chance to produce a random legendary rune. This process consumes your rare runes but provides a consistent way to obtain legendaries over time.

Similarly, you can upgrade magic runes into rares, and then use your rares for further upgrades. It's recommended to keep a stock of at least six of each rune, especially if you plan to craft mythic items, to avoid running out of required runes later on.

Whenever you start to accumulate a surplus of rare runes, use the conversion process to increase your legendary rune count, supplementing the runes you earn from bosses and tribute runs.
